New iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: prices, specifications and launch date

With Samsung reeling from the losses of having to recall and halt production of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to several reports of the phone overheating and exploding, Apple took full advantage with yesterday’s presentation of their new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models. Although it was rumored that the new models had very few enhancements and additional features, with some detractors even recommending waiting until the launch of the iPhone 8, it has to be said that the Cupertino-based tech giant didn’t disappoint.

So what exactly did Apple announce at the launch that had all their fans raving?

The most significant changes on the new iPhone models include a remarkably improved camera, a new home button and the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Performance: With every new iPhone comes an upgraded chip and the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are no exception. The new A10 Fusion is said to be the fastest smartphone chip ever, running 40 percent faster than the iPhone 6S A9 chip and twice as fast as the A8. To put that into some sort of perspective, the A10 Fusion chip is 120 times as fast as the chip used in the first iPhone.

Camera: Without a doubt, the biggest improvement is with the camera which has been rebuilt from scratch and now on par with digital cameras according to Apple. The iPhone 7 has a 12-megapixel rear camera and 4K video recording capability. The front-facing camera has 7 megapixels perfect for the selfie lovers among you. On top of all this, the iPhone 7 Plus has an additional rear camera which redefines what zoom can mean to people due to its wide angle lens.

Display and sound: Similar to the iPhone 6S, the iPhone 7 has the same 4.7-inch screen. The HD Retina display is 25 percent brighter than the previous model and includes the pressure-sensitive 3D Touch layer. The iPhone 7 Plus is slightly larger at 5.5 inches. We also say goodbye to the headphone jack with Apple including a pair of Lightning EarPods with the iPhone which connect through the charging port. With regards to speakers, the new iPhone models now have two with one positioned on the top and one at the bottom for a greater dynamic range and double the loudness.

Storage: At long last, Apple has phased out 16MB storage which was sufficient back at the start of the decade when video watching was less prevalent and the basic model iPhone 7 has 32MB. For those of you needing a phone with a little more punch, there is a mid-level option with 128MB storage and even a top-level choice of 256MB for the heavy users.

Battery life: Compared to the iPhone 6S, the 7 will last at least two more hours of normal daily usage and the 7 Plus at least one more hour compared to the 6S Plus.

Colors: Still available in pink, gold, and silver, you also have two new shades of black to choose from: a matte “black” which is really a dark grey and a never-before-seen glossy black.

Pre-orders start tomorrow with release a week later on Friday, September 16.

With prices starting at $649 for the iPhone 7 and $749 for the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple have once again put even their most loyal customers to the test.
